ATLAS Live talk: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and the Higgs boson with Dr. David Rousseau
23 March 2022 | By
On 31 March 2022 at 8pm CEST, Dr. David Rousseau will give a live public talk on the ATLAS Youtube Channel on the role artificial intelligence plays in particle physics research.
Artificial Intelligence is everywhere. From automatic translation and image identification to targeted advertising, it’s easy to find in your daily life. It also plays a growing role in particle physics, helping scientists deal with the billions of proton collisions amassed by the ATLAS experiment. Neural Network algorithms – just like those used to speed up video games rendering – can speed up online event filtering. Machine learning even used in the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson and, nowadays, make precise measurements of Higgs boson properties – helping physicists explore why the Universe is dominated by matter and not antimatter.
However, science cannot blindly rely on Artificial Intelligence. In this talk, Dr. Rousseau will explore how AI is used in ATLAS research, the benefits it brings, and how physicists are promoting this automated revolution while still standing firmly at the helm.
Dr. David Rousseau is a High Energy Physicist at IJCLab, CNRS/IN2P3 and Université Paris-Saclay, currently working for the ATLAS experiment at CERN on the Large Hadron Collider. After a dozen years working on ATLAS software, a chance meeting in 2013 with a Machine Learning computer scientist decided a new path in his career: developing the interface between High Energy Physics (and science in general) and Machine Learning (or Artificial Intelligence).
This event is part of a series of ATLAS Live Public Talks held on YouTube. You can watch more in the dedicated YouTube playlist.
